Postpartum Anti-Anxiety Tea Blend

When it comes to herbs for the postpartum time there are many to choose from which have many different qualities. Anxiety, baby blues and postpartum depression is all too common of happening nowadays with the demands on women.

These herbs which are used in these blends are chosen most of all since they are easy to find herbs and the double duty of these herbs. Since some do not like the taste of different herbs but still would like to benefit from their properties, tinctures are a great way to still get the benefits without drinking the tea.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) The name says it all, which means ‘mother herb’ and the Latin name translates to ‘lion heart.’ When I work with postpartum mamas or those prone to PPD, I suggest this herb and within 20 minutes there is a real shift.

*Contraindications: Best to avoid while pregnant as it is said to be a potential uterine stimulant in high doses. Anyone who has clotting disorders should not use it as well.

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) This herb has been used to relieve stress and anxiety. Studies have shown it to be calming which makes it really ideal for postpartum time. The herb also has a history of treating insomnia and sleeplessness.

*Contraindications: Current research suggest that people on HIV medication as well as any thyroid medicines or sedatives should not use this herb.

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) It’s calming and relaxing properties can be used to restore balance to an overworked individual or in the evening to promote normal sleep.

*Contraindications: Should not be used during pregnancy.

Since some do not like the taste of Motherwort or Skullcap buying the tincture of each and adding about 15 drops of each in the Lemon Balm tea is what I would recommend to my clients.
