How to easily make an herb poultice

Imagine you’re hiking with your kids and one of your kids gets a cut or a bug bite. It’s easy for it to get infected if left untreated.

But if you know your herbs and especially ones that have anti microbial properties (don’t worry I’ll let you know some common ones) it’s easy to make a poultice out in the field in order for the infection to not spread.

What Is a Poultice?

It is an herbal remedy that is made by combining herbs with a moist base that when mixed together can be applied externally to relieve toxins, pain, inflammation, draw out venom and help with the healing process.

Poultices work by drawing out toxins, reducing swelling, increasing blood flow, and providing you with soothing relief.

How to Make a Poultice

You will need:

  • Plantain leaves
  • Cloth or muslin bag
  • Warm water

Instructions:

  1. Gather fresh plantain leaves and finely chop or crush the leaves to release the medicine inside.
  2. Place the plantain in a clean cloth or muslin bag. You can moisten the cloth with a bit of warm water to make it slightly damp.
  3. Apply the poultice directly to the affected area and keep it in place by wrapping a bandage around it. The ones I use are the Vet bandages that do not stick to your hairs.

Duration:

This really depends on how infected or big your area is that you are treating. Generally, they are used for 30 min to an hour but if there is a severe condition you can leave it overnight or several hours.

Make sure you monitor the area to see if you need to replace it or leave it open or if there is any discomfort or irritation.

Can You Store and Reuse a Poultice?

Preferably you should prepare a poultice fresh. But if you need to, you can store it in an airtight container or bag to make sure it remains moist and not dry out.

If you have a refrigerator nearby and not out in the field then you can extend the life of the poultice for 24-48 hrs.

Once the plant material is used it’s best to discard it and not reuse it.

Final thoughts

Making a poultice is a very effective way to help you with wounds or bug bites to help them not get infected.

Knowing which herbs to use is very important because you do not want to put a deadly plant on your wound.

Some herbs I love are Yarrow, Mullein, Usnea and Plantain.

Of course the plants you will choose will differ greatly depending on what’s growing around you and how well you know those plants. This is where you knowing your herbs well comes in handy.

I hope this helps you on your own journey with your wellness and your family’s wellness.
