It is virus season! Many people are looking for essential oils that can help them support their health during this season.
It seems like once someone that we know is sick then my own family is bound to follow with getting the very dreaded illness. Are you worried about this years sick season? When the season start changing then the new weather brings on a whole new set of challenges.
Many essential oils have antibacterial and antivirus properties but you also have to do the work in other areas of your lifestyle to support your overall vitality. Essential oils are just a great supplement to add to the mix in order to keep those germs at bay and open up sinuses.
Your age and any medications that you are taking can make some oils unsafe to use. Children should not be using certain oils until a certain age.
HERE is the article on safe oils for children.
These are some things that I found helpful when it comes to helping my overall health during the changing season. Remember, your body needs your support also.
Rest
With the changing seasons, school starting, busy holidays, gifts, presents, family gatherings (did I cover it all) we all forget to rest. I personally find it very difficult to recharge when things are pilling up on my to-do list so rest actually has to be a priority for me in order to not be burn out.
Food
This one is easy to let go right? What types of food we eat really effects our overall health, but add a changing season to the mix and you have yourself a recipe for a sickness. During the holiday season especially those cookies and cake look so appetizing but I do believe that we can find a good balance so our health does not plummet. I know we can do it!
Water
Guilty here also. Preferring to drink cold water to hot water, I found that drinking water during the colder months is on the low priority list. However, you can do some water hacks that work for you. Maybe it is adding a little favor to your water. Maybe it is having decaf tea. What hacks do you have for drinking plenty of water?
Exercise
Keep your body strong by keeping up your exercise routine. I am not going into the chemistry of the release of endorphins and how it keeps our heart healthy, I am sure you’ve heard it before. If you exercise outside this is a great opportunity to get outside for a little bit and not stay indoors all day.
Do Something with First Onset
This is where oils can come in and be of real help. Even diffusing lemon will help to clear up that air and get those germs under control. I start diffusing right away if there are any sickness going around or if my kids have been hanging around a lot of other children in a congested area. Lemon is my personal favorite, I am sure you have your own that you love!
Sinus Congestion Oils
These oils have been used in a steam inhalation method. With this method it is best to not have a plastic container. All that you need to do is heat up some water and inhale to preferred oil. There are a lot to choose from including:
- Rosemary
- Peppermint
- Tea Tree
- Eucalyptus
- Raventsara
- Cardamom
Chest Rub
An easy way to use these oils is by using coconut oil or aloe vera gel along with some oils in a chest rub or by simply dropping a few drops on a tissue and inhaling the oils. There are inhalers that you can buy HERE and make your own to carry around with you as well. Some popular oils fo chest rubs are:
- Tea Tree
- Eucalyptus
- Rosemary
- Thyme linalol
- Frankincense
- Lavender
- Ravintsara
You can also add these oils to a bath to give yourself that relaxation and the steam will help to relieve that congestion. A great bath mix is using lavender and frankincense adding a few drops under the running water.
If going into the shower sounds like a better idea then you can make your own shower disks they are supper easy to make:
What you need – 1 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup water
Directions: Mix baking soda and water together and bake in muffin pan at 350 F for an hour. Let cool overnight. When ready to use, add a few drops of eucalyptus on the disk (or peppermint) and put the disk in the shower to let the steam rise with the oils in the shower.
It is important to remember that it is not just the oils that add the health benefits to your life. Your body has to all be in balance and that can be hard during the busy season. Preparation is a life savor during these busy times. Just taking the time to know what your triggers are and where you always slip up can help prepare you that much more.
